STREETS TREES (Breda II), 2022, Installation
Wo Meine Sonne Scheint in Tuinzigt, Breda, 21.–29.5.2022

STREETS TREES (Breda II), 2022

As a contribution to the group exhibition Wo Meine Sonne Scheint (Where My Sun Shines), Albert Coers is developing a series of installations in Breda, based on his interest in names of people and places. In the Tuinzigt (“Garden View”) neighbourhood, the streets are named after plants, mainly trees. A.C. researches in the city library, collects pictures and texts, assembles an associative collage from photocopies, in the window of a private flat at Abeelstraat 33, a street name that reappears in the collage itself and happens to be first in alphabetical order of names. In the window, the installation is located at an interface between public and private space, providing information while at the same time shielding the view inside.
As an extension into the public space, A.C. attaches photocopies to about 20 poles with signs of street names, pictures and texts that refer to the respective trees. The result is a trail through the neighbourhood that can only be perceived at second glance and that also touches and connects other locations in the exhibition. In doing so, Coers plays with forms of communication that are officially not permitted and ephemeral. Where there are usually messages about runaway cats and announcements of birthday parties, there are now pictures and texts without any current practical value, which only refer to the place itself and the street name. New associations are emerging with the urban space, with stickers present on the poles, with houses and trees.
