Index cards from the slide library of the Institute of Art History at the University of Düsseldorf, each approx. 6 x 4.8 cm, in 9 slide storage units, each 21.5 x 27.5 cm

Coers works with index cards from the defunct slide library of the Institute of Art History at the University of Düsseldorf, extracting words from their context and reassembling them. Coers displays the cards—which were annotated over decades and established an alphabetical classification system based on locations, subjects, and names among thousands of images—without the slides to which they originally referred; he combines them with one another, thereby generating new meaning. They are exhibited in slide storage units, whose grid pattern is incorporated into the installation.
